Capacitance point level detection in liquid naphthalene – A point level measurement to avoid overfilling or emptying is required in almost all process containers today. In the chemical industry, sensors are usually exposed to aggressive, adhesive, or caustic materials. The measurement technology must deal with high temperatures, varying DK values, and viscosity fast and efficiently. To meet these conditions in practice, system planners are increasingly using the capacitive rod probes.

A leading chemical manufacturer, mainly processing naphthalene derivatives in addition to carbon, coal tar, pitch, and special oils required reliable and robust level monitoring, which could be flexibly adapted to fluctuating ambient conditions.

As a combustion product of organic materials, naphthalene occurs in low concentrations almost everywhere in the environment and can be used as a contaminant, e.g. in carbon blacks, which are used for blackening, and in mineral oils, which are used as plasticizers. Another application is in the production of solvents, plastics, fuel additives, and insecticides.

In the liquid state, naphthalene is an aggressive substance that quickly corrodes common materials. If it becomes firmer as it cools down, it tends to become heavily attached.  Tests concluded that tanks can be constantly monitored using the capacitance measuring principle of UWT’s robust RFnivo® probe. The RF series are adaptable rod probes, which due to their design do not require any temperature-restricting components for media detection and can, therefore, be used smoothly in processes up to 500°C. They work with the capacitive measuring principle, whereby the capacitance is measured regardless of the length of the sensor of the medium between the probe tip and the container wall.

The chemical manufacturer has several storage tanks that are electrically heated to maintain the melting point of the naphthalene. There is a process pressure of approx. 0.8 bar (11.6 psi). The DK value fluctuates between 1.6 and 2.0. Each tank was equipped with a RFnivo® installed on the overflow line for full notification to ensure reliable protection against the overfilling of the containers. When the material is removed, the temperature drops rapidly causing caking on the sensor boom. Overflow line being there at a height of 1700mm, the installed RF probes work within this overflow line under constantly changing process temperatures (max. up to 80°C (176°F). The “Active Shield” technology integrated as standard in the RF probe ensures that the measurement result is not influenced in the long term by the buildup on the probe. The storage tanks could thus be provided with a reliable content monitoring system, which, due to the design, can optimally adapt to the changing environmental conditions, which meant the optimal support of a smooth and maintenance-free manufacturing process for the plant operator. Special attention was also paid to the aspect of process safety in chemical plants. A certified design in accordance with international approvals according to ATEX, IEC-Ex, FM, FMc, etc. qualifies the RFnivo® for the safety standards of this demanding industry.

What is important to the operator?

The RFnivo® calibrated itself after mounting and wiring in the box after power was applied. The operator had to do nothing further but set the signal output in the QuickStart menu after its application. If an RFnivo® is used in an application to which the supply voltage has already been applied, only the calibration button needs to be pressed after installation in the container. The probe automatically adjusts to the new application. Thus, the calibration of the RFnivo® is easily performed. For “diehard” RF probe operators, there is also a powerful manual and menu-driven calibration. This ultimately leads to the same result as the automatic calibration.

The universal voltage electronics are clearly equipped with a display and 3 control buttons and provide a DPDT signal output for signal evaluation. During operation, the display will always show the capacity measured now.

Parameters such as FSH (fail save high) and FSL (fail save low) as well as reaction time of the signal output can be clearly arranged in a quick start menu. A test button allows the manual start of a self-diagnosis of the sensor. If required, an automatic self-diagnosis can be set, which then regularly checks the correct function of the RFnivo® and activates the failsafe in case of error. This self-diagnostic runs in the background without affecting the function of the probe in the application.

More solutions with the capacitance series for level measurement in liquids, pastes and foams

After gaining valuable experience within liquids applications, UWT has expanded its portfolio to include compatible solutions for all liquids, pastes and foams. The RFnivo® 8000 series was included in the RFnivo® level switch series, which is especially suitable for the detection of pasty, adhesive and corrosive liquids as well as for foam detection. UWT solution in animal feed – Capacitive measuring sensors are the all-rounders amongst limit switches as they have the highest application performance in the basic version.  A well-known animal feed manufacturer implemented the Capanivo® capacitive level detector from UWT GmbH within its mixing tanks for blending processes. Precise media detection with adherent raw materials

During animal feed production, similar processes occur in all production sites, such as within the mixer. An important step is the mixing of flour or pellets with liquid raw materials such as molasses, vinasse, oils, fat, or choline. The Capacitive sensors offer optimum support for the detection of filling levels in material handling processes due to their high compatibility for different process containers. The material to be inspected can have a completely different nature depending on the processing stage and can impose different requirements on the measuring technique to be used.

The animal feed manufacturer installed the integral version of the capacitive Capanivo® CN 7100 limit sensor. When touched by a medium, the sensor reacts to the change in capacitance on the probe arm, whereby a signal output is then switched. The universally applicable two-wire switch is particularly suitable for limited space conditions due to its unique compact design. Besides the version with connection cable, a housing version and a complete plastic version are also available. The CN 7100 guarantees a safe flow of media within the mixer despite vibrations and the fact that some of the liquids are viscous and adherent, which is compensated by the integrated “tip sensitivity”.

With its reliable media detection and short reaction time, it helps to ensure the correct mixing proportion of the individual components, the homogeneous distribution as well as the lasting quality of the end product. Approximately 50-100 kg liquid components of various liquid media are added to about 3 tons of solid content, in the mixers. These are injected into the mixing container within one minute by a special injection device. For this purpose, the various liquids are injected from storage tanks or mobile containers (GRP), with a pressure of up to 5 bar, into the mixing container via a distributor attached to the mixer. The Capanivo® CN 7100 level switch installed in the distributor ensures both that the liquid intended by the control system is present in the distributor (= media detection) and at the same time is available in sufficient quantity, thus guaranteeing the correct and quantitative supply to the various formulations.

A challenge of the plant is that only one distribution device is attached to the mixer. This is fed with the different liquids one after the other, pressure is built up and from there the liquids are then distributed to injection lines and pumped into the mixer at different points. The design of the sensor used implies food-conforming materials and is universally applicable. It detects all liquids with the highest degree of safety even if the previous liquid still adheres in one layer to the sensor and inside the distribution device and is only rinsed out by the subsequent liquid. All these requirements are met by the UWT Capanivo® CN 7100.

The basic working principle is as follows:

  • Sensor weight drives down on a measuring rope/ tape.
  • The rope/ tape length is electronically measured by the rotation of the internal rope/ tape roller

  • Motor changes the direction of rotation
  • Sensor weight is driven back to the upper stop position

APPLICATION EXAMPLE:

THE CHALLENGE:  Content measurement for silos – The level measurement should be carried out in storage silos for gypsum powder. The finished product is conveyed pneumatically into the storage silo after production. The overall production planning is difficult if the fill level monitoring of the storage silos is missing. The operator previously had to climb onto the silo roof and carry out a manual level measurement with a rope and a weight. This yielded inaccurate results and caused huge losses in stock management and control. The task was to automate the level measurement and to avoid manual measurements.

THE SOLUTION:  The UWT lot system Nivobob 3200 in the tape version fulfills these extreme requirements. The integrated tape cleaner prevents contamination of the band interior. The Nivobob 3200, thereby, provides a reliable measurement that can be totally trusted. Neither very dusty nor clumpy conditions adversely affect the UWT Lot system. Satisfied by a classic solution – The Rotary Paddle Level Switch

A synthetic fibre company producing a wide range of polyester textile yarns, geotextiles and carbon, and heat resistant polypropylene materials, for products such as special protective clothing or packaging solutions in agriculture and construction have successfully installed Rotonivo® devices for different powders and granules in several process vessels. Depending on the requirements, they function as full, demand or empty detectors and, thanks to their simple electromechanical measuring principle, can also be adapted to extreme process conditions, such as high temperatures up to +1,100°C. The RN rotary paddle is mainly used for storage and drying of plastic particles as a full detector as well as in dosing tanks and extruders for demand reporting. During conveying processes, it works as an overfill detector. For protection against temperatures of below -20°C, a heating function was integrated in the electronics.

Level measurement in clean and contaminated acetone within the textile industry: Capacitance solution in acetone tanks for overfill protection and empty detection

As the synthetic fibre manufacturer was satisfied with the rotary paddle detectors, they also required a measuring solution from UWT for their acetone containers.  Preliminary tests in the solvent tanks were conducted.  During synthetic fibre manufacturing, acetone is used to impregnate the fabric. Each fabric to be produced is passed through a bath of clean, pure acetone, where amongst others excess epoxy resin, which is used for bonding the fibres, is washed off. Most of the resin is usually cured after the heat treatment, non-hardened epoxy resin can be removed during this process step. Thereafter, the acetone is considered polluted and enters a separate tank, where it is cleaned in a special mechanical process. Subsequently, the purified solvent is filled in the tank container with so-called regenerated acetone.

Acetone is an extremely aggressive substance that secretes corrosive vapors and quickly corrodes ordinary materials. For the individual tanks with clean, contaminated as well as regenerated acetone the synthetic fibre manufacturer needed a reliable, and at the same time robust, level monitoring system. Tests carried out with a variety of sensors made it clear that the robust RFnivo® probe was the most favorable solution. The RF series consists of single-rod probes that require, due to their design, no temperature-limiting components for media detection and can, therefore, be used in processes of up to 500°C.

They work with the capacitive measuring principle, whereby the capacitance is detected independently of the length of the sensor of the medium between the probe and the container wall.

 

The customer has different tanks measuring from 1.2 to 1.6 meters in diameter. Apart from a reliable measurement, even with frequently occurring pressure fluctuations, it was also essential that the sensor carried a corresponding certificate according to gas explosion protection (Zone1). Firstly, each tank was equipped with an RF probe (standard version) for full signal, that ensured reliable protection against the overfilling of the acetone containers. Secondly, an empty detection system was installed in each container, that switches on time to prevent dry running. As it is common that the sensor probe is exposed to the acetone and the aggressive molecules of the acetone vapour for longer periods of time, especially during the empty detection process – it was realized that an extra robust version of the device was required. The capacitive single rod was thus refined – 1.4404 (316L) stainless steel and PPS isolators were used with a FFKM seal in the product-contacting probe.

The FFKM seal (perfluoroelastomer / perfluoro rubber) has a particularly high chemical resistance against aggressive materials. Perfluoro rubber is considered as the new generation plastic. It is a true high-tech elastomer, which is always used when special demands are placed on resistance to chemicals, temperature, and form. The equipping of the probe seals of the capacitance level indicator with the highly robust polymer made them resistant to the acetone. Clean and regenerated as well as contaminated acetone tanks can be similarly monitored using the capacitive measuring principle.

The Active Shield Technology, which is integrated into the RF probe as standard, also ensures that the measurement result will not be affected by any build-up on the sensor probe. A total of 16 acetone tanks could be fitted with a reliable content monitoring, which meant the optimal support of a smooth and maintenance-free manufacturing process for the synthetic fibre producer.

The maintenance-free electromechanical lot system Nivobob® is mounted on each silo within the plant for continuous level monitoring. The plumb bob systems of the economical Nivobob® 4000 series come standard with a Modbus interface which allows for quick and easy connection of the units to the visualization system.

Parameters such as content level, operating time, pending replacement intervals, sensor status are available to the operator. For level control, diagnostics etc. the license-free visualization software Nivotec® is used: The information is sent from the electromechanical lot sensors to the visualization system via Modbus. The operator can access the required information from any PC 24h a day. The software with its data storage and trend analysis function enables the operator to perfectly plan material disposition and any logistics required. The outcome is efficient silo management resulting in cost saving due to planning security. With this new development UWT has responded to the demands for an affordable solution which combines reliable level monitoring with live-data visualization for effective silo management.
